Visiting medical students, residents, and fellows who wish to pursue elective clinical courses at the University of Washington must have their own professional liability coverage with minimum limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence. This requirement may be satisfied in one of two ways:
Option I - Through Program Covering Your Own Institution
Some colleges/universities or employers have insurance or self-insurance programs which cover their residents and fellows wherever they may pursue their studies. Contact the risk management department of your institution to obtain a certificate of insurance completed as follows:
- Name of Certificate Holder: The University of Washington and its Board of Regents
- Name of Insured: Name of Institution & Name of Resident/Fellow
- Limit of Liability: $1,000,000 per occurrence, $3,000,000 aggregate ($1,000,000 per occurrence, $1,000,000 aggregate for medical students)
- Deductible: Not greater than $5,000. If the school’s insurance program has a large deductible, the resident may provide a letter indicating it will indemnify the resident within the deductible amounts
- Policy Dates: Must cover the resident’s expected length of study
- Description of Coverage: Certificate must indicate medical resident/fellow is an insured with respect to acts, errors or omissions of that medical resident/fellow while pursuing studies at the University of Washington. The certificate should be included with your application to the University of Washington.
Option II - Purchase of Individual Insurance Policy
If an individual policy is purchased, the insurance broker must provide a certificate of insurance with the following information:
- Name of Certificate Holder: The University of Washington and its Board of Regents
- Name of Insured: Name of Resident/Fellow Insurance Company: Best’s Rated A IX or better, admitted in the State of Washington
- Limit of Liability: $1,000,000 per occurrence, $3,000,000 aggregate ($1,000,000 per occurrence, $1,000,000 aggregate for medical students)
- Deductible: Not greater than $5,000. If the school’s insurance program has a large deductible, the resident or fellow may provide a letter indicating it will indemnify the resident or fellow within the deductible amounts.
- Policy Dates: Must cover the resident or fellow’s expected length of study.
