Sick Leave

The University of Washington requires classified staff to “buy back” their sick leave when the employee is paid sick leave from the University and also receives time loss payments from L&I for the same period of time. Non-unionized classified staff and classified staff under the UW/UAW Academic Student Employees labor contract are excepted. Buy back of sick leave is optional for professional staff. UW faculty are not eligible. The Buy Back Program reconciles this “double payment” and allows for reinstatement of a proportionate amount of sick leave to the Injured Worker’s leave record.

Annual Leave

The University of Washington allows all classified and professional staff to buy back annual leave when the employee is paid annual leave from the University and also receives time loss payments from the Department of Labor & Industries for the same time period. The University of Washington Leave Buy Back Program reconciles this double payment and allows for the reinstatement of a proportionate amount of vacation leave to the eligible employee’s vacation leave record. Buy back of annual leave is optional for all classified and professional staff. UW faculty are not eligible.
